SUMMARY:STRONG COASTS WEBINAR: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED - DATE TBD!
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED – DATE TBD! \nThe Great Carbohydrate Injection into the Biosphere: more calories\, less nutrients\, & unknown health risks \nGUEST SPEAKER DR. IRAKLI LOLADZE will talk about his findings that rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels (CO2) decrease the concentrations of minerals essential for human nutrition\, including iron and zinc\, in plants globally. After years of compiling data\, in 2014 he published a meta-analysis revealing a pervasive and systemic downshift in mineral levels in plants worldwide. His research came to influence US policy and was highlighted by New Scientist\, Nature\, Science\, and in a two-times award winning article in Politico. \n \nDR. IRAKLI LOLADZE \nSpeaker website: https://sites.google.com/site/loladze/home \nIn the news: “The Great Nutrient Collapse”. The atmosphere is literally changing the food we eat\, for the worse. And almost nobody is paying attention. By Helena Bottemiller Evich\, 09/13/2017\, Politico\nhttps://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2017/09/13/food-nutrients-carbon-dioxide-000511/ \nBio: Irakli Loladze is a Mathematical Biologist. He obtained his MA and PhD degrees in mathematics at Arizona State University. He then worked as a postdoc at Princeton University\, where in 2002 he postulated that rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels (CO2) decrease the concentrations of minerals essential for human nutrition\, including iron and zinc\, in plants globally. In 2019\, Loladze and collaborators showed that rising CO2 levels result in lower levels of plant carotenoids critical for human eye and brain health.

SUMMARY:STRONG COASTS WEBINAR: Understanding Complex Resource Insecurity: Interdisciplinary Approaches & Future Directions
DESCRIPTION:As a biocultural anthropologist\, GUEST SPEAKER DR. CASSANDRA WORKMAN is interested in looking at the ways in which humans are impacted biologically\, psycho-emotionally and socially\, by food insecurity and water and sanitation (WaSH) insecurity. In order to understand these complex interactions\, she engages medical anthropology\, environmental anthropology and other scientific disciplines such as public health and hydrology. She uses both qualitative and quantitative methods in her research and has conducted research in Lesotho and Tanzania\, Africa\, as well as in eastern North Carolina. In collaboration with faculty from NC State and Sokoine University of Agriculture\, she currently has a NSF funded project examining complex resource insecurity in Morogoro\, Tanzania. In addition to conducting scholarly research\, she has worked in international development for donor organizations and implementing partners in Mozambique\, Tanzania\, and South Sudan. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER! \nDownload and share the flyer: \n \n \nSpeaker website: https://anthropology.uncg.edu/cassandra-workman/

SUMMARY:STRONG COASTS WEBINAR: Food Equity & Science Communication Tactics
DESCRIPTION:GUEST SPEAKER\, DR. JOE BOZEMAN III\, will talk about climate change and social identity as it relates to the food-energy-water nexus and global environmental change. Some of his findings show that despite spending less than white households on food overall\, black and Latino households have more impact on the environment per dollar spent on food than white households. \nDr. Bozeman researches issues involving energy and environmental sustainability. He explores climate change and social identity as it relates to the foodenergy-water nexus and global environmental change. This research is intended to facilitate more effective climate change and food policy measures applicable to the U.S. and countries around the globe. \nDr. Bozeman is the Chair of the Gordon Research Seminar in industrial Ecology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at\nChicago\, and is a member of the Institute for Environmental Science and Policy. He has given talks to diverse audiences ranging from policy makers to the general public to K-12. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER! \nDownload and share the flyer: \n \n \nSpeaker website: www.joebozeman.com \nRelated published work: “Overcoming climate change adaptation barriers: A study on food–energy–water impacts of the average American diet by demographic group” – https://doi.org/10.1111/jiec.12859 \nBio: Dr. Joe Bozeman III researches issues involving energy and environmental sustainability. He explores climate change and social identity as it relates to the food-energy-water-nexus and global environmental change. This research is intended to facilitate more effective climate change and food policy measures applicable to the U.S. and countries around the globe. \nSome of his published research findings to date show that white Americans disproportionately affect the environment by eating foods that require more water and release more greenhouse gases compared with foods that black and Latino individuals eat. A 2019 article published in Environmental Engineering Science (EES) found that despite spending less than white households on food overall\, black and Latino households have more impact on the environment per dollar spent on food than white households. He and his co-authors received the AEESP Mary Ann Liebert Award for publication Excellence in Environmental Engineering Science in 2020. The criteria are that the research addresses an important and relevant research question\, the research is significant and original\, the paper is well written\, and the research is substantial in scope and makes a consequential advancement in the field. \nDr. Joe Bozeman is the Chair of the Gordon Research Seminar in industrial Ecology.
